• The Borgias
By Hola Oliva
The Borgias, from Valencia, Spain, go up against the most powerful and established families in Renaissance Italy and come out on top in the new Showtime TV series, The Borgias. Through the masterful use of bribery, extortion, blackmail, and shocking forms of torture and murder, Rodrigo Borgia from the powerful Borgia family, Valencia, rises to the position of Pope, Alexander VI, the most venerated in the Western World. Outsider Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia as sucsessor, seems like a long shot. But the Italians vastly underestimate the ambitions of the rapacious Spaniard, played by actor, Jeremy Irons.

“Now we are in the power of a wolf, the most rapacious perhaps that this world has ever seen. And if we do not flee, he will inevitably devour us all,” statement of Giovanni de Medici at the conclave of Rodrigo Borgia of Valencia,11 August, 1492.
